This guide will help you navigate and make the most of our news website. We aim to bring you the latest news "සැනින් එසැනින් ඔබ වෙනුවෙන්" (Instantly, for you).

Getting Started: The Homepage

When you visit Laknews.lk, you'll land on our homepage, which is designed to give you a quick overview of the latest and most important news.

  1. Main News Area (Center Column):
    • Initially, you'll see a carousel (slider) showcasing top headlines. You can navigate this using the arrow buttons.
    • Below the carousel, you might find the "Web වැකිය" section, offering insightful commentary.
  2. Left Column (නවතම පුවත් - Latest News):
    This column displays a list of the most recent articles. Scroll down to see more. Click on any title to read the full article.
  3. Right Column (Sidebar):
    Here you'll find:
    • "මෙම මස ජනප්‍රියම ලිපි" (This Month's Most Popular Articles).
    • Advertisements that support our website.
    • "විශේෂාංග ලිපි" (Featured Articles).
  4. News In Brief (Ticker):
    Located just below the header, this ticker scrolls short, breaking news updates.

Finding Specific News

There are several ways to find news on topics you're interested in:

  1. Using the Search Bar:
    • Click the (Search) icon in the top right of the header.
    • A search bar will appear. Type your keywords (e.g., "Sri Lanka economy," "sports news") and press Enter or click the "Search" button.
    • You'll be taken to a search results page listing relevant articles.
  2. Filtering by Category (Left Column):
    • In the "නවතම පුවත්" (Latest News) section in the left column, click the "Categories" dropdown button.
    • Check the box next to one or more categories you're interested in (e.g., Politics, Business, Sports).
    • The list of articles in the left column will update to show news only from the selected categories.
    • To see all recent news again, click "Clear Filters" in the dropdown.
  3. Browsing Recent Articles (Left Column):
    Simply scroll through the "නවතම පුවත්" (Latest News) list. Articles are generally listed with the newest first. Click on an article title or image to read it. Pagination controls ( / ) will appear at the bottom if there are many articles.

Reading an Article

When you click on an article title or link:

  1. Article Display: The full article content will load in the center column, replacing the homepage view.
  2. Images & Galleries:
    • The main article image will be displayed near the top.
    • If there are more images, a "More Images" gallery might appear below the main image. You can scroll through thumbnails and click to view them larger.
  3. Article Information: You'll see details like the author, publication date, category, and sometimes view counts.
  4. Related Parts (සබැඳි ලිපි): If an article is part of a series or has closely related preceding/succeeding parts, a box titled "සබැඳි ලිපි" will appear. You can click on the titles within this box to navigate to those related articles. The current part you are reading will be highlighted.
  5. Previous/Next Articles: At the bottom of the article, you'll find "Previous" and "Next" buttons to navigate to chronologically adjacent articles (not necessarily related by topic).

Sharing Articles

If you find an article interesting and want to share it:

  1. Share Icons: Below the article's meta information (author, date), you'll find share icons for:
    • Facebook
    • X (formerly Twitter)
    • WhatsApp
    • Email
  2. Click to Share: Click the icon of the platform you want to share on. A new window or tab will open, allowing you to complete the sharing process.

Understanding "Web වැකිය" (Web Wa)

The "Web වැකිය" section on the homepage provides short, thought-provoking pieces related to significant news items.

  1. Content: Read the heading and the main content for a concise perspective.
  2. Navigation: Use the arrow buttons ( / ) at the top of the Web වැකිය box to navigate to previous or next entries. The current ID will also be displayed.

Advertisements

Laknews.lk displays advertisements to help support our operations and keep our news content free for you. You will see ads in various places, such as the right sidebar and potentially within or between articles.

  1. Types of Ads: We feature ads from Google AdSense and may also display custom advertisements from our partners.
  2. Relevance: Ads from Google AdSense are often targeted based on your browsing history and interests (you can manage these preferences via Google's Ad Settings). Custom ads are generally selected by us.
  3. Interacting with Ads: Clicking on an ad will typically take you to the advertiser's website. We are not responsible for the content or practices of third-party advertisers.

Using Laknews.lk on Mobile

Our website is responsive and designed to work well on mobile phones and tablets.

  1. Layout Adjustments: The layout will adjust to fit your screen. For example, the left and right columns might stack below the main content area.
  2. Navigation Menu: The main navigation links (Home, More, etc.) will be accessible via a "hamburger" menu icon () in the header. Tap this to open the menu.
  3. Search: The search toggle button will also be in the header, functioning similarly to the desktop version.
